Navalpreet Rangi
Documentary Filmmaker & Art Photographer ·
Navalpreet Rangi was born in Chommo, Punjab, India. He was educated at the Karamsar School associated with Gurdwara Karamsar Rara Sahib in Punjab. From a young age, he showed creative promise—he published his first book, Chiragan Di Low, while in the 11th standard at the age of 16. In the 12th standard, he staged his first play, Kissa Ek Laash Ka, working with IPTA (Indian People’s Theatre Association) Punjab, and also studied photography under Tejinder Artist in Khanna. While pursuing his undergraduate studies at DAV College, Chandigarh (Sector 10), he was deeply involved in literary, theatrical, and cultural activities — with the Punjabi Sahit Sabha, the drama club, and in dance (Bhangra) groups.
After college, Navalpreet moved to Mumbai, where he worked as an art photographer at Prithvi Theatre. During this period he continued building his multidisciplinary skills in theatre, photography, writing, and performance.
Filmmaking & Documentary Work
Over time, he shifted more into documentary filmmaking, producing works that often highlight Punjabi heritage, social issues, migration, and the stories of influential figures. The experiences of Punjabi migrants in Canada — their challenges, reasons for migrating, and the difficulties faced by international students. The Tribune+1Biographical documentaries on important historical and cultural figures. He also engages his audiences beyond screenings: for example, organizing seminars and discussions (such as with international students in Surrey) following his documentary work.
Studios, Festivals & Entrepreneurial Ventures : In 2016, he founded Studio 7 Production, a photography/film studio with locations in Brampton (Ontario) and Surrey (British Columbia), Canada. He is also the founder of the Ma Boli International Punjabi Film Festival (MIPFF) in Vancouver, which focuses on art films, short films, documentaries, and feature films—especially those rich in cultural and content-driven value.
Themes & Approach : Navalpreet’s work tends to combine visual art, cultural storytelling, and social commentary. His background in literature, theatre, and visual arts gives him a multidisciplinary perspective. He highlights voices that are often underrepresented: migrants, historical figures from Punjab, the challenges of cross-cultural identity, and social issues facing diaspora communities.
Personal Style & Impact : Navalpreet is known for being deeply engaged with his community, both in India and in the Punjabi diaspora in Canada. He uses storytelling not just to inform or document, but to foster connection, reflection, and often, action. His screenings are often coupled with conversations, and he uses his platform to raise awareness of issues like migration, education, and cultural preservation.
DOCUMENTARIES SCREENING TOUR 2025-2026
As a documentary filmmaker, I’ve always believed stories connect us across borders. I’m planning an upcoming tour through India, Pakistan, Canada USA, the UK, and Australia — exploring cultures, voices, and untold stories that deserve the spotlight.
This journey isn’t just about filming; it’s about listening, learning, and creating bridges through cinema. Stay tuned for updates from the road — and if you’re in any of these countries, I’d love to connect with fellow storytellers, communities, and changemakers.
